Scholarships

Scholarships are for McCaskey High School Seniors.
LEF administers over 60 scholarships.  Most are selected by faculty or administration.

This year, the foundation plans to present the following scholarships:

Scholarships for Academic Excellence

Arlene Fisher Art Scholarship

Award: $1,000
Number of recipients: 1
This Scholarship is given in memory of Arlene Fisher, a well-known Lancaster County artist, who graduated from McCaskey High School in 1954. 2D or 3D painting that references Lancaster City or County, in any way. Submit your digital file to slmauer@lancaster.k12.pa.us

Benjamin B. Herr Scholarship

Award: $1,100
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to the highest-ranking student in Physics who is going to attend a college or university and has demonstrated a desire to continue their education in this field.

Carlos Lopez Award

Award: $1,100
Number of recipients: 1
Student has a GPA of 3.0 or higher and is pursuing a career in teaching.

Doug Brown Scholarships

Award: $2,500
Number of recipients: 2
This scholarship is given to students in need.

Buckwalter/McCaskey Scholarship Award Scholarships

Award: $250
Number of recipients: 2
This scholarship is awarded to the graduating top male/female English students.

Carl H. Ernst Memorial Scholarship

Award: $1,000
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates significant interest in pursuing the study of some aspect of nature and/or the natural world (i.e. biology, environmental studies, botany, ecology, zoology, geology). The student will be selected by teacher and/or counselor recommendation. Someone in whom they see a “spark of potential that might be fanned into a flame” given opportunity and encouragement.

Class of 1953 and Friends Scholarships

Award: $1,200
Number of recipients: 2
These scholarships are awarded to students who maintain a minimum GPA of 3.3 and demonstrate stellar Citizenship and Leadership. One scholarship will be given to a student who shows a marked achievement in Performing Arts and one student who shows a marked achievement in Sports. This is a Needed-Based Financial Aid award for those who demonstrate well-honed character.

Class of 1961 Scholarship

Award: $1,000
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is given to a graduating senior in need who has been a conscientious student with good grades and good character, who has a goal that requires educational training beyond high school, and who was involved in extra-curricular activities within student life or service or work in the Lancaster community.

Class of 1966 Scholarship

Award: $1,000
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is given based on academic excellence.

Gloria J. Cunningham Scholarship

Award: $2,000
Number of recipients: 2
This scholarship is awarded to a former Price Elementary School student, who has an overall GPA of 3.25 or higher and is planning on continuing their education by majoring in either: Education, Business, Communications or Sociology. The student must exemplify a determination of excellence in both class and community involvement. The student also must have a positive attitude and be worthy of honor.

Darryl Glover Scholarship

Award: $500
Number of recipients: 1
A Senior graduating from J.P. McCaskey High School, with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and pursuing a degree in education.
Funds to be used for books or tuition and must specify at the time of application.
Special Terms/Criteria for the Award: Preferably, the recipient be African American and from the Southeast of the city.

Dennis Schmid Excellence in Journalism Scholarship

Award: $1,000
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is given to an outstanding student in the area of journalism.

Ebersole Award Scholarship

Award: $600
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a student who has demonstrated excellence in the area of history.

Education Enrichment Scholarship

Award: $1,900
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a student who has demonstrated high academic achievement, a financial need and plans to pursue a technical career at a four-year college or university.

Elta Graybill Memorial Award

Award: $1,000
Number of recipients: 1
Student is attending an institution of higher learning and must write an essay about an obstacle he/she has overcome.

Exelon Scholarship

Award: $1,000
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a student who maintained a 3.0 GPA and is pursuing a degree in the area of STEM or Business related fields with an interest in pursuing a career in the power industry.

DeVonte W. Gantt Scholarship

Award: $1,000
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a male (preferred) African American student of need who has a 3.0 GPA or better and is seeking post-secondary education.

H. Grant “Tick” Hurst Scholarship

Award: $1,600
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a student who has enrolled in at least a Level II Foreign Language, is a member of the National Honor Society, has a minimum GPA of 3.5., and has lettered in at least one sport.

Hall of Honor Award Scholarship

Award: $500
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a Hall of Honor recipient.

Hartman & Neeley Memorial Scholarship

Award: $1,300
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a student who has demonstrated excellence in English.

Robert C. Hicks ’44 Leadership Scholarships

Award: $1,000
Number of recipients: 2
These scholarships are awarded to one male and one female student who has a 3.0 GPA or better. Other criteria include:

  • A student of need, who is enrolling in a two- or four-year post-secondary institution.
  • A student who shows exemplary interest and ability to motivate and lead fellow students in the pursuit of positive outcomes.
  • A student who sets direction and inspires vision, utilizing effective communication and management skills to guide fellow students toward agreed goals.

The students may come from any discipline (the arts, social action, athletics, community service, student government, etc.).

Pamela and Katerina Karpouzis Scholarship

Award: $2,000
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a student who has achieved a 3.0 GPA, and who has pride in their culture as well as interest in the cultures of others.
The student recipient should be a people person, who is known for their gift of conversation and their genuine care for others.
McCaskey has been the launching pad for this student. It is the building block upon which the person will grow to make a difference in the world.

Joan M. Williams Scholarship

Award: $1,500
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a student who attended Wheatland Middle School, excelled in Social Studies, has a good sense of humor, and is a good citizen.

L. Anna Eberle Lefever ('42) Memorial Scholarship

Amount of Award: $1,000
Number of Recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a first-generation American student of need with a 3.2 minimum GPA.  The student must have demonstrated good character through commitment to family, community, or employment.  Application must be supported by a letter of recommendation from employer, or faith or community leader.

Class of 1967 & Lutzite Scholarship

Award: $1,000
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a deserving student who has excelled in business (The dollar amount of the award must be approved by the Lancaster Education Foundation board of directors).

Neal/Ernst Award Scholarship

Award: $1,000
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a student who has excelled in the area of science and is majoring in education at the post-secondary level.

Paul Yeager Accounting Award Scholarship

Award: $500
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a student who has demonstrated outstanding excellence in accounting. This award is not to be restricted by career goals or college choice.

Nicholas M. Valudes Memorial Award Scholarship

Award: $500
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a senior who is entering elementary education and shows the qualities of leadership and commitment to service organizations.

Violet B. Weber Scholarship

Award: $2,000
Number of recipients: 2
These scholarships are awarded to students who have demonstrated a financial need and are pursuing post-high school education.

Scholarships for Athletic Performance

Barney Ewell Scholarship

Award: $800
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a student who is a member of the McCaskey Track and Field Team and has been accepted into a two-year or four-year institution of higher education. The student must demonstrate a strong work ethic, a strong sense of community, a willingness to help others, and the ability to relate to people of diverse backgrounds.

Doug Brown #61 Football Scholarship

Award: $2,500
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a college-bound football player.

Hartman & Neely Memorial Soccer Scholarship

Award: $650
Number of recipients: 2
These scholarships are awarded to one male and one female student who have demonstrated excellence and achievement on the soccer field.

J. Freeland Chryst Scholarship

Award: $750
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a student attending Millersville University and is going to play football at the collegiate level.

Missey Farrel Kralick Cheerleading Scholarship

Award: $1,800
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a McCaskey student cheerleader who has a “B” average or above and is college-bound.

Myers Athletic Scholarships

Award: $3,000
Number of recipients: 3
These scholarships are awarded to three outstanding student-athletes.

Stephan Santaniello Football Scholarship

Award: TBD
Number of recipients: 1
Graduating student athlete football player, who possesses outstanding leadership skills and a passion for the game of football.

Scholarships for Vocational/Technical Excellence

Class of 1944 Scholarship for Vocational Graduates

Award: $500
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a student who has attended a vocational program, has an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher for their junior and senior years, and has demonstrated the conduct of a good citizen.

Mark S. Lebowitz Scholarship

Award: $2,000
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a student attending college or a technical school.

Michael J. Kaire Photography Scholarship

Award: $500
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a student who is pursuing higher education in the field of photography.

Vivian Bowman Rhoads Scholarship

Award: $2,500
Number of recipients: 2
This scholarship is awarded to two students who are attending Technical or Vocational higher education programs.

Scholarships for Music Excellence

Ernest J. Papavasilion Memorial Scholarship

Award: $200
Number of recipients: 1
This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who is attending a four-year college program in the field of music.
