Scholarships

Each year, LEF offers nearly $80,000 in scholarships for McCaskey High School Seniors. Awards are presented for Arts, Sciences, Languages, Athletics and more.

Below is a list and a short description of each scholarship. Students are encouraged to discuss possible scholarships with their counselors and apply through the scholarship link on the SDoL website.

Academic Achievement Scholarships

Benjamin B. Herr

Award: $1,000

Number of recipients: 1

Highest ranking student in Physics who is going to attend a college or university and demonstrated a desire to continue their education in this field.

Buckwalter/McCaskey Scholarship Award

Award: $250

Number of recipients: Graduating top (1) male/ (1) female English students.

 

Carl H. Ernst Memorial Scholarship

Award: $1,500

Number of recipients: 1

The student must demonstrate a significant interest in pursuing the study of some aspect of nature and/or the natural world (i.e. biology, environmental studies, botany, ecology, zoology, geology). The student will be selected by teacher and/or counselor recommendation. Someone in whom they see a “spark of potential that might be fanned into a flame” given opportunity and encouragement.

Award: $1,250

Min. GPA of 3.3. Stellar Demonstration of Citizenship and Leadership, Marked Achievement in (1 student) BUSINESS and (1 student) MATHEMATICS. Needed-Based Financial Aid and Well-Honed Character.

Class of 1961

Award: $1,000

Number of recipients: 1 

Given to a graduating senior in need who has been a conscientious student with good grades and good character. A student who has a goal that requires educational training beyond high school and was involved in extra-curricular activities within student life or service or work in the Lancaster community.

Carlos Lopez

Award: $1,000

Number of recipients: 1 

Student has a minimum GPA of 3.0 and is pursuing a teaching career.

Carroll J. Staub Education Scholarship

Award: $1,000

Number of recipients: 1 

Student is a senior who plans to enter college in the fall, must have need, must be majoring in education with the intention of becoming a teacher, must have a 3.0 GPA or better.

Darryl Glover Scholarship

Award: $500

Number of recipients: 2 

A Senior graduating from J.P. McCaskey High School with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and pursuing a degree in education.

Funds to be used for books or tuition and must specify at the time of application.

Dennis Schmid Excellence in Journalism

Award: $1000

Number of recipients: 1 

Outstanding student in the area of journalism.

Doug Brown

Award: $2,500

Number of recipients: 2 

Student in need.

Ebersole Award

Award: $600

Number of recipients: 1 

Student demonstrated excellence in the area of History.

Education Enrichment

Award: $1,900

Number of recipients: 1 

Student has high academic achievement and a financial need. Student plans on pursuing a technical career at a 4-year college or university.

Elta Graybill Memorial

Award: $1,000

Number of recipients: 1 

Student is attending an institution of higher education and demonstrates financial need.

H. Grant "Tick" Hurst

Award: $1,600

Number of recipients: 1 

Student who has enrolled in at least a Level II Foreign Language, who is a member of the National Honor Society, with a minimum GPA of 3.5, and is lettered in at least one sport.

Hall of Honor Award

Award: $500

Number of recipients: 1 

Hall of Honor recipient, selected by faculty.

Hartman & Neely Memorial

Award: $1,300

Number of recipients: 1 

Student demonstrated excellence in English.

Robert C Hicks '44 Leadership Scholarships

Award: $1,000

Number of recipients: 3 (1 female, 1 male, and 1 non-gender specific)

3.0 GPA or better (unweighted)

A student of need, enrolling in a two or four year post-secondary institution.

A student who shows exemplary interest and ability to motivate and lead fellow students in the pursuit of positive outcomes.

A student who sets direction and inspires vision, utilizing effective communication and management skills to guide fellow students toward agreed goals.

The student may come from any discipline (academics, the arts, athletics, community service, social action, student government, etc. )

Karpouzis Scholarship

Award: $1,500

Number of recipients: 1

Student has achieved a 3.0 GPA; but, is not necessarily the “best” student. The student has pride in their culture as well as an interest in the cultures of others. The student is known for their gift of conversation, and they genuinely care about others – a people person. McCaskey has been the launching pad for this student. It is the building block upon which the person will grow to make a difference in the world.

Joan M. Williams

Award: $1,500

Number of recipients: 1

Student attended Wheatland Middle School. Student excelled in Social Studies. Student has a good sense of humor. Student is a good citizen.

DeVonte W. Gantt

Award: $1,000

Number of recipients: 1

3.0 GPA or better. African-American student of need seeking post-secondary education. Male preferred.

Gloria J. Cunningham

Award: $2,000

Number of recipients: 1

Student has an overall GPA of 3.25 or higher. Student exemplifies a determination of excellence in both class and community involvement. Student has a positive attitude, worthy of honor.

Class of 1967 & Lutzite

Award: $1,000

Number of recipients: 1

A deserving student who has excelled in business.

Neal/Ernst Award

Award: $1,000

Number of recipients: 1

Student excelled in the area of science, majoring in education at the post-secondary level.

Paul Yeager Accounting Award

Award: $500

Number of recipients: 1

Outstanding student in accounting, not to be restricted by career goals or college choice.

Rose S. Bland Scholarship

Award: $500

Number of recipients: 1

This student should show and demonstrate outstanding “dedication” to SDoL, both academically as well as extra curricular activities. Also any connection with the community would be an added bonus.

Violet B. Weber

Award: $2,000

Number of recipients: 2

Student pursing post-high school education and demonstrates financial need.

L. Anna Eberle Lefever

Award: $1,000

Number of recipients: 1

First-generation American student of need. 3.2 minimum GPA. Student must have demonstrated good character through commitment to family, community, or employment

James Spoo Scholarship

Award: $500

Number of recipients: 1

Someone with a strong academic record that indicates the recipient would be successful in a college-level academic environment and someone who would best benefit from financial assistance.

Dr. Paula Wilson Scholarship for Future Educators

Award: TBD

Number of recipients: 1

1000 word essay to include the following:

1. Paragraph detailing where you grew up, any hobbies, extracurricular activities, and volunteer work.

2. Explain your passion for education and why you want to be an educator.

3. Write about an inspirational educator or person who has helped you become the person that you are.

4. How you have the passion to help others learn. After graduating from college, the hope is that the recipients give back to the Dr. Paula Wilson Scholarship to help it to continue to grow and support other future educators.

Jeffrey and Nancy Young Scholarship

Award: $2,000

Number of recipients: 1

Awarded to one student who will pursue higher education in a STEM career path, accepted into a 2 to 4-year higher education program at a College, University or Technical School, has a minimum GPA of 3.0, and has demonstrated personal accountability, social responsibility, and ethical behavior.

The donors hope that the scholarship is awarded to an African-American student, or, as appropriate, any other minority.

Student is a B-Average student, is college-bound, and is a McCaskey cheerleader.

Student is an outstanding athlete.

A graduating student-athlete football player pursuing further education who possesses outstanding leadership skills and a passion for the game of football.

A graduating senior who is attending a four year college program in the field of music.
